Current climate warming enables many species to shift range to novel habitats in higher latitudes and altitudes. This range shift is one of the ways of species to survive. However, it also creates conditions where communities can become re-arranged. First, as plants may shift range at different rates than insects, vertebrates and the various groups of soil organisms with which they have been co-evolved, in the new range original communities may not necessarily become re-assembled as they were in the original range. This can have profound impacts on the performance of individual species, both ones that shift range and the local natives. In my presentation, I will elucidate patterns and possible ecological (and evolutionary) consequences of such ‘personalized’ range shift patterns for the composition and functioning of natural terrestrial communities under ongoing climate change. Some unexpected results give rise to new ideas about how natural systems may change under current climate change.
