My primary area of research is early modern literature (1500-1800), which I explore with both qualitative and quantitative, digital methods. I am particularly interested in literature's relationship to political and economic history, including inherited wealth. From 2017 to 2022, I led a collective research project on this topic. I have, among other things, written The Book and the People – The Politics of Romantic Literature (2013). My latest book, Character Networks (co-written with Ross Deans Kristensen-McLachlan), on social networks in Shakespeare's plays was out in 2025 on Bloomsbury as volume 4 in The Arden Encyclopedia of Shakespeare's Language.
