Dead whales may be a sign of positive developments

The humpback whale was once close to extinction but is now making a strong comeback. As a result, more humpback whales are being seen in Danish waters.

The recent strandings of humpback whales along the Danish coastline may actually be a sign that the population is recovering. During the 1960s and 1970s, humpback whales were hunted intensively. However, since commercial whaling ended, the population has grown significantly. As more whales return to Danish waters, the likelihood of sick or weakened individuals washing ashore also increases.
