The biodiversity crisis is current in stream ecosystems, just as we see in terrestrial ecosystems. Many species are currently in decline, and some species have become rare. In recent years, we have quantified the decline and found that about one-third of plant and small animal species are rare today. Looking deeper into the numbers, we can see that more than 50% of the rare species today are threatened.
At the Department of Biology, we research natural and anthropogenic processes that affect biodiversity in streams, and we look at how we can restore biodiversity in streams.
