Oxygen Transport & Metabolism group

We use a comparative approach with focus on hypoxia tolerant species to study the physiological function and evolution of oxygen carrier globin proteins. In particular, we are interested in hemoglobin in the blood and myoglobin in the heart. We also study signalling functions of NO and H2S ‘gasotransmitters’ in controlling metabolic depression, and their interactions with globins and other proteins. As a recent advance in our lab, we investigate the regulation of mitochondrial respiration and of reactive oxygen species following oxygen deprivation and reoxygenation in animal models.
